About the Commission

for Suicide Prevention

The Commission for the Implementation of Public Policy on Suicide Prevention is created under article 3 of Law 227 of August 12, 1999as amended, known as the "Law for the Implementation of Public Policy on Suicide Prevention" with the goal of preventing suicidal behavior in Puerto Rico.

We develop and establish suicide prevention strategies.

We collaborate with multiple sectors of society,
in order to raise awareness.

We sensitively train the population about suicide and how to prevent it.

Misión y Visión

Mission

Promote, develop, implement, coordinate actions and strategies for suicide prevention adopting an integrative and interdisciplinary approach directed at individuals, families, communities at risk, as well as helping professionals; emphasizing research, the development of prevention and intervention programs and the awareness of the population regarding the magnitude and seriousness of suicide in Puerto Rico.

Vision

Design and implement a National Plan on Suicide Prevention that allows the uniform management of the broad and complex spectrum of suicidal behavior in public and private institutions, through the creation of a Uniform Protocol, implemented by a team of experts committed to this social and social problem. public health.

¿Quiénes somos?

La Comisión cuenta con un equipo de profesionales especialistas en el campo de la salud pública y la salud mental, encargados de desarrollar las metas conforme al Plan Estratégico.

All members and designated representatives meet monthly to work on planning strategies and activities focused on suicide prevention.

Anualmente, la Comisión somete a la atención del Gobernador y la Asamblea Legislativa un informe de progresos y logros.

Prevention Guidelines and Protocols
The Commission for the Implementation of Public Policy on Suicide Prevention will promote the implementation of suicide prevention guidelines and protocols in all municipalities and public and private entities.
Improving mental health
It will promote the exchange of information dedicated to the development of programs for the improvement of mental health and suicide prevention of the population.
Education and awareness campaigns
Education and awareness-raising campaigns on suicide prevention will be promoted in the media.
Suicide Prevention Workshops
Manage the delivery of suicide prevention workshops with continuing education credits for health care professionals.
Surveillance system
It will develop and coordinate the necessary elements for the implementation of the epidemiological surveillance system.
Statistical data in Puerto Rico
It will serve as the official source of statistical data on suicide mortality in Puerto Rico and will guarantee easy access to such data for the entire population through the Department of Health's electronic portal.
Collaborations with universities
It will develop and coordinate collaboration with universities to promote research and training of professionals in the area of suicide prevention.
